LOYALIST'S DAY. To-day is the hundred and ninth anniversary of the landing of the Loyalists. Quite a city has sprung up on the barren and hilly site where the early settlers first made their abode. Greater than the material changes which have taken place since 1783 are the political changes. The policy of the successful party in the great contest which made the United States independent compelled the exile of the Loyalists, and these latter cherished a great deal of hard feeling against the successful revolutionists. This was an unfortunate as it was natural; time is, however, the great healer, and time is doing its work, very satisfactorily. The revolted colonies have become a great nation. The colonists who remained, faithful to the crown did not believe that the new nation would hold together, but thought that the democratic principles, which had triumphed over the policy of the English King, would bring ruin upon the people. Slowly the mists of prejudice, the bitter feelings engendered by the family quarrel, the disappointed hopes of the one side, the haughtiness engendered by success on the other, are disappearing. And the separated people are most surely coming together. They must, in due time, discover that they are necessary to each other. When that does happen and is fully realized it will be a bright day for these Eastern Provinces.
