THE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION AND EXHIBITION. There ought to be some way of ascertaining what form of Centennial Memorial the people of this city and province will provide in order to do honor to the memory of the Loyalist founders. Shall we have a memorial pure and simple or a hall, with library, reading room, art gallery, museum, etc., or can we have both? It is partly a question of taste, though perhaps much more a question of ways and means. It is stated that the Dominion grant to the Quebec drill shed is to be increased from $15,000 to $42,000. That is a suggestive fact in connexion with a national celebration and as that of our Centennial. The Dominion paid a handsome sum to be represented at the Centennial of the United States; what will it give to assist the St. John celebration, outside of that for purely Exhibition purposes? It is not likely that these matters will be dealt with at the public meeting to be held on Wednesday evening, and therefore they ought to be disposed of in some other way. The Common Council, some time ago, proposed a large city and provincial grant for this purpose. That is now abandoned. Perhaps the Council has some other plan in reserve, and is prepared to make some sacrifice in order to carry it out.
